First time hosting a dinner & very nervous?

I'm hosting a dinner for the whole family, and I've never cooked for anyone besides for my hubby. Anyone have any advice? What should I cook? Should I have desert? How should i set everything up? And how can I make it entertaining, %26amp; not boring?

make something you are good at and are comfortable with,now is not the time to try new recipes!

Reply:I have a big family and love hosting dinners.. and I totally feel for you.

First of all, make something you are comfortable with, now is not the time to experiment. You can usually double or triple a recipe so you can feed everyone.

Don't stress about what people do or don't like, as guests they should be polite and take only what they will want to eat.

With that said, a main dish and a starch side dish and vegetable side dish should accommodate everyone.

Dessert is nice, but you can do something simple, that you can make ahead, or even purchase from a bakery. Assorted cookies, pound cake with fresh fruit or a simple apple pie are big hits.

Have everything prepared before your guests arrive so you can visit. Have all the plates silverware napkins and glassware put out either on the table or a side board so people don't have to go through your cupboards.

If this is just family maybe bring out a board game for during dessert, or you can always sit around the table talking, no need to go all out for this, the dinner is good enough.

Just remember to relax and enjoy, that will put everyone else at ease and it will be a success.
Reply:First off you need to figure out whos all coming and make enough for those who want seconds to have it.

For super big family dinners I usually do a 15 or bigger turkey, Bone in Ham or several big beef roasts cooked low and slow in the oven or slow cooker so I can concentrate on the other items.

Have one pasta salad, one veggie salad, one fruit type salad, Have dinner rolls, veggie tray and dip, Have coffee, tea and sodas or juice for those that want it.

If your going with Ham, make scalloped potatos or a green bean casserole. If your going with Beef roast go with mashed potatos and gravy. But those are just ideas.

For dessert, buy angel food cakes, and buy ice cream and toppings for ppl to choose from.

Make the whole thing sit down but Buffet service so you dont need to be running around while everyones eating. And dont be afraid to ask for help from the family thats there when its clean up time. They came to your home to eat, they can be kind and repay a bit by doing dishes or packing the food away.

Reply:I would advise picking a menu that relies a lot on dishes that can be prepared ahead, or finished simply at the last minute. This will allow you time to spend with your guests and be a hostess. Otherwise it is easy to get stuck rushing around fixing all sorts of dishes. So for example, maybe dessert is fresh berries with a simple topping of whipped cream, drizzled heavy cream, or what we did this week, lemon curd. The berries also could be soaked in a little liqueur like Chambord or Grand Marnier.

But this dessert would be all set to go, just put the topping on the already prepared cups of berries and you are done.

So as much of this kind of recipes as you can put together will allow you to feel relaxed and not worry how things will turn out, as you know they are already done or near done.
Reply:make a standing rib roast, or a pork crown roast....very impressive. also make some au gratin potatoes, rice pilaf, or twice baked potatoes. as an extra vegetable, make honey glazed carrots. make a nice green salad and some dinner rolls. have a nice bottle of wine handy and a nice dessert...possibly apple crisp or strawberry shortcakes.

make it very elegant. use linen napkins and table cloth. set out some candles and put a nice flower centerpiece or arrangement on the table.

Also, if you can make everything ahead and just reheat, it saves you lots of headaches and hassles.

Don't be afraid to ask your guests to help with little tasks if necessary.

and most importantly, if they are drunk enough before dinner, they won't notice any problems with the food!!

Reply:First--don't fret!! Make something easy, that you don't have to spend time in the kitchen while you have company. Let the oven do the work. How about baking a roast, potatoes, carrots, onion. Buy a gravy mix or can(s) of gravy, so you don't fret over lumpy gravy, or serve juices from roast as an aujus. During last half hr, put in frozen veggies, around roast.

Yes, you should have a dessert. Don't know how many you are serving, but just get a Dutch apple and cherry pie from the grocer's freezer and bake before hand. Throw in french bread during last 15 min. %26amp; Viola--Easy dinner! All you have to due is slice roast.
Reply:do something that involves everyone, like fajitas. have all of your toppings out so they can pick what they want. For dessert try a chocolate fondue with a variety of fruits and cookies to dip in the chocolate (dont forget s'mores)

Reply:1. 30 Minute Chicken Marsala

Defrost 4 skinless boneless chicken breasts the night prior to preparing this meal. Refrigerate.

Mix 1/2 cup of floor, 1 teaspoon of pepper, 1 teaspoon of marjoram, 1/2 teaspoon of salt.

Take four chicken breasts rinse and pat dry. Press chicken breasts into flour mixture. Coat thoroughly. Shake off excess.

In a large frying pan, place a quarter stick of butter and melt. Add 1 cup of fresh sliced mushrooms, 1/2 cup of sliced green onions. Saute. When tender remove from skillet. Put chicken in same skillet. Brown. Add onions and mushrooms back into skillet. Add 1/4 cup of chicken broth. Add 1/4 cup of dry sherry or dry Marsala. Cook on medium two to three minutes, until mushroom mixture thickens. Serve with bread and butter, beverage of your choice, and fresh fruit for dessert. Your family will think you've hired a gourmet chef.

2. 30 Minute Incredible Cranberry Pork Chops

Fry four to six 3/4 inch thick pork chops in butter or margarine over medium heat for five minutes. When brown, drain off all fat. Now, add 1/2 cup of apple juice to pork chops in pan. Bring to a boil. Now, cover and simmer for an additional five minutes. Remove pork chops from pan. Keep Warm. Reserve 1/2 cup of the juices in the frying pan. Mix together 8 0unces of cranberry sauce, 2 teaspoons of corn starch, and 1 teaspoon of brown sugar. Add this to reserved juices in frying pan. Stir well. Cook this mixture about 3 minutes, until it is thick and bubbly. Spoon mixture over pork chops. Serve with a quick cook rice,frozen or canned vegetable and applesauce.

3. 30 Minute Meatball Sandwiches

Mix two eggs, one pound of hamburger and one cup of bread crumbs together. Form meatballs. Place a paper towel on a microwave safe plate. Put your meatballs on top of this and microwave for two and a half minutes. Turn the meatballs and microwave for another three minutes. Place meatballs in a pan on your stove. Add a jar of your favorite ready made spaghetti sauce to the meatballs. Heat sauce. Serve meatballs on submarine sandwich rolls. Top with parmesan cheese. Serve a tossed salad on the side. Cut up cantelope for desert. Voila! A nutritious meal in under 30 minutes.

4. 30 Minute Soup and Sandwich Souper Easy Supper

Prepare this soup first, and serve with grilled ham and cheese sandwiches. Add watermelon for desert and you're done in under 30 minutes! To make the soup, place the contents of one ten ounce package of frozen cut broccoli in a medium sauce pan. Add 3/4 cup of water and 3/4 cup of shredded carrots to mixture. Bring to a boil, then simmer, covered for five minutes. Mix together 2 cups of milk, a dash of pepper, a dash of salt, and 1/3 cup of flour. Combine with one 14 1/2 oz. can of chicken broth. Add this mixture to the sauce pan. Add six ounces of shredded co-jack cheese. Cook approximately 10 minutes, or until mixture is thoroughly heated. Grill hot ham and cheese sandwiches while soup is heating. Serve!

5. 30 Minute Man Pleasing Meal

Wash four to six potatoes. Poke holes in them with a fork. Place in microwave. Cook for five minutes. Check potatoes. Cook for an additional 5 to 8 minutes depending upon microwave strength and potato size. Keep warm when done. While potatoes are cooking, preheat broiler. Take four to six steaks and using a sharp knife, place several slits in each steak. Stuff the slits with rosemary and garlic. Cover steaks with lemon pepper. Broil to desired doneness. Serve with baked potatoes, fresh salad, and bread and butter.

Serve canned fruit cocktail for desert.

Pot Roast of Beef

5-6 pound pot roast

1/2 cup flour

2 teaspoon salt

1/8 teaspoon pepper

4 carrots, sliced

4 potatoes, quartered

1 pkg onion soup mix

2 stalk celery, sliced

2 cup mushrooms, sliced

1/3 cup flour

2-3 cups water, beef broth or wine

Directions

Combine 1/4 cup flour, salt, and pepper; coat meat.

Place all vegetables, except mushrooms, into the Crock-Pot® slow cooker. Top with the roast. Spread mushrooms over roast. Cover and cook on Low for 10-12 hours or on High for 6-8 hours.

To thicken gravy, make a paste out of 3 tablespoons flour and water and stir in.

Serves: 8-10

Size: 6-7 quarts

Reply:My first ? is for how many? That will dictate allot. The next is what is your budget and how formal do you want it. With the weather getting nicer it might be allot of fun to do a nice bbq and eat outside with tablecloth and candles. People are eager to get outside now. You know best what these folks like to eat. Family style always keeps things lively as do fun foods like mexican, oriental and use chop stix, etc. A very safe bet is your traditional turkey dinner. You have to work really hard to screw that up and almost everything can be made a day or so ahead (taste better too). Some really nice apps for all occations are veggies and dip, cheese and crackers and meat/cheese and asparagus rolls with cream cheese. You always want to have something for desert w/ a good! coffee both caf and decaf. I like to serve something light with a big meal, sorbet, fresh fruit, cookies- fortune cookies make for good conversation even if you are not having chinese. For the table, just put out either a nice table cloth or place matts making sure they are clean. Cloth napkins make for a nice touch. I preffer low profile things on the table so they are not in the way of conversation. I usually use small conack snuffers with votives and a few very small arrangments of flowers, just a few flowers and greens. If you have six or more try to have one set of salt and pepper shakers to every 4-6. The night before you want to get your serving pieces out and organised; platters, bowls, gravy boats, and utensils..dont forget the butter tray and knife and bread basket. I spend the first of my budget on the liquer if a small group buying what I know each preffers; don't go cheap on this if you can help it as I have heard more talk afterwards on this issue at other affairs than any other. If a large group a nice red and white along with a small assortment of beer and then a whiskey, a gin, a vodka, and bailys for the coffee with mixers. Needless to say, the club got numerous phone calls objecting to the idea saying that it's a way of segregation within the culture i.e. light-skin vs. dark skin. People also reference this party with the "Doll Test" (black children choosing white dolls because they think white dolls are 'pretty and good').

So, how do you feel about a party dedicated to light-skinned black women?

Congratulations to the "Negroes" who have successfully publicly displayed the highest form of self-hatred there is! Only one who has deep rooted, generational hatred for himself and his African ancestry would consider intra-racial segregation.They have culturally regressed 50 years by pulling a ploy that only those who would seek to further reepress African-Americans by any means necessary. After all of the struggling, marching, and scarificing the elders have done, this is how their contributions and legacies are honored. I am not only saddend to learn of this ignorance, but I am completly repulsed. When this information was shared with my parents who were participants of the civil rights movement and have shared stories of many "firsts" within my lifetime, ie: first African-Americans to hold several positions of power and authority in the City of Phila., all I could do was apologize to them and again thank them for their contributions as well as those of their contemporaries. I hope and pray that this type of ignorance is contained to Detroit and not something that would ever be entertained any where else in the world.

I have a site with Yahoo Web Hosting, and I have used one of their templates for my design. I know they have a Gallery2 add-on, but I am looking for something more like Flickr - easy to upload and update - but that lives within my existing design.

Is there such a thing? Can you please help?

At this time I am looking to set up a personal travel website and maybe later for business, but first I need to find a strong web hosting company. I have looked up several including Lunarpages, Infinology, Host Monster, StartLogic, and Blut Host. I will not pretend to know all that much about web hosting, but what I do know is that I want a very profesional looking website when I am done, which means I need one with an excellent web builder. For the punch mix sherbet with Sprite. Use pink, yellow or green sherbet depending on if you know what the baby will be. You will need 1/2 qt of sherbet and a 2 liter bottle of Sprite. Pour the Sprite into a bowl and add the sherbet until the mixture turns frothy.
Reply:Do sandwich platters to start - make 6 sandwiches each of chicken salad, egg salad, pimento cheese, and sliced ham. All of this can be purchased at the deli. Cut each sandwich into two halves, diagonally and stack them on a plate/platter decoratively.

Do a raw vegetable platter with broccoli, baby carrots, grape tomatoes, and celery sticks. Ranch or onion dip are the most popular. Put out some whole wheat crackers with the vegetables. If you don't have a lot of platters, cover cookie sheets and pizza pans with aluminum foil.

Do a fruit platter or bowl with chunks of canteloupe, honeydew, seedless watermelon, strawberries and blueberries.

You can order a decorated cake or just do one yourself and top it with diaper pins, a rattle, a pacifier, a little plastic baby doll you can find in the toy section of a dollar store, etc...

To drink, have lemonade and decaffeinated iced tea or a punch bowl with a simple fruit punch (you can get the frozen party punch that you just thaw a little and then pour ginger ale over it.)

The most important part is to do everything ahead that you can and not make yourself crazy. The part everyone will remember the most is how much fun they had, not how homemade the food was. A relaxed hostess is the best :)
Reply:Spinach Dip is always a hit, just mix 1 tub sour cream with 1 pkg frozen chopped spinach (defrost and sqeeze dry first), and add 1 pkg vegetable soup mix. put in sour dough bread, or pumpernickel, get some extra bread, even bagels will work, break in pieces, and dip them in the dip, sooo yummy. Also veggies and dip, finger sandwiches, fruit salad, fresh fruit cut up with some dip (yogurt and whip cream). have fun!!

Reply:always include a salad, but a good way to do it is have everyone make their own salads. set out a variety of veggies like red onions, black and green olives, radish, tomatoes, etc. add some meats like turkey and ham chopped up. let everyone make it the way they like it. or you can do sandwiches and let everyone do their own. include regular bread, wheat, and alternatives like flat out bread for ones who are watching what they eat. for meats i would do ham, turkey, salami, pepperoni, pastrami. put out veggies like tomatoe onion and lettuce. get mustard(spicy brown and regular) mayo and miracle whip. make a potatoe salad to go with it. boil the potatoes like you would for a regular one and add relich but substitute sour cream for the mayo. it tastes incredible also instead of seasoning it with black pepper use white. its a little spicier but its powdery and not gritty like black. and boiled eggs for the salad. it will be less worjk for you so you can focus on the decorations and other things like games. also you are guaranteed that everyone will like what they eat because they choose what they want. if you do salad get one iceburg, one spring mix, and maybe a baby spinach mix. doing it this way you also dont have to worry about allergies and stuff in case you dont know all the people invited well. make it easy on yourself soi you can enjoy the party too and salad and sandwiches are great in hot weather. also easy cleanup. have a great time. sorry so long.

she made 2 kinds of homemade soup, ham %26amp; bean and turkey with wild rice. she just served some pre-washed bagged mixed greens in a nice bowl with some other veggies added in(i.e. tomatoes, red onions, etc.) and had some dressing on the side. since this is summer and my shower was in the winter, you could possibly serve lighter soups like a creamy tomato or wedding soup. you can pick them up premade at your local deli. you could also get a nice sandwich platter or cheese tray to go along with it, and make a fruit salad or platter.

baby shower themed cookies are always great...cake is optional, i prefer homemade to the "personalized" ones at bakeries.

just remember to keep it simple, since this is(probably) all ladies--you won't need big steaks or beer here! lol. good luck, i hope you have fun. :-)

I changed the layout on my profile, and all of a sudden I have no pictures on my profile anymore. My default pic and my friends' pics are there, and their links still work, but the pics that I put up of my friends and stuff arent working on my profile. I've taken the links off the pics, and all they say in the pictures' places are "picture and video hosting by tinypic"... help?

If I understand you, we are talking about using a third party to host, say, your company's web site and has included some number of email addresses for your company to use? So, you order plan C with web hosting company A. You get the web site, which simply exists on one of the third party's (Company A) many servers. They most likely made you buy or gave you a domain name like www.you.com, for example. They register that URL with their server's IP address, and as part of your deal with them, they write some code to accept say 50 separate email addresses that are in the form of JDoe@you.com. Then you have to go out and get your mail either by downloading it to a server at your site, which probably defeats the purpose of having the third party to begin with, or you set up your employees to go to the third party's server using a mail client like Outlook Express, download it, and everyone at your company gets his/hers intended email from the third party's server. You purchase a web hosting account that allows you to host other domains on it, each with their own Cpanel set up so your customers can have full control over their web sites. You in turn charge the customer for the hosting account they use. This would be far simpler than setting up your own server and associated equipment.

I use Godaddy.com. On a shared server you'll pay $48 bucks a year. Make sure that when you sign up that you choose windows hosting. There is an automatic installation script they use for DNN. You just decide where you want the installation to occur and it does the rest. The only draw back is that it can't be installed in your root directory. So if you had xyz.com your installation would need to occur at xyz.com/whatever. What you can do to resolve this is to use a meta refresh page to redirect your visitors or do like a flash splash page.

Another drawback is that they send you offers in your email just about daily. I'm sure there is a way to take your name off the mailing list but I'm too lazy.

Many hosting companies will limit the types of data you can store on your website. Because you are restricted in the way you can use your disk space, you will be provided a ridiculously large amount of storage. As a background, premium disk space costs an IT company like IBM or EDS 4.00-20.00$ per GB of disk space. But if your starting out and you expect a lot of hits to your site, normally you would want to have a dedicate server for yourself. There are many companies out there who could handle this but one company that I have worked with is Rackspace.

The problem is not with connection, u could use simply GB port. The problems are with redundacy: UPS, Internet connections, security hardware (at 500 sites it's impossible to not be attacked). If u calculate all this for sure u would prefer a datacenter colocation with built-in reduncancy and network perimeter security.
Reply:From a network perspective, you don't necessarily have to use fiber for your medium of transport. It could easily be copper if the bandwidth meets the requirement. Gauge how much bandwidth your servers would require and based on that, you can start looking for access/connectivity technologies being offered by ISPs that would best suit your needs in the most cost-efficient manner.
Reply:For this many sites, you really need multiple servers for redundancy, and will need far more upload bandwidth than any standard broadband can provide.

a sufficient number of websites actually make good on their full allotment of

bandwidth/storage and then...Ouch! That's how your website is going to feel

if it's hosted on one such server.

Another aspect to consider about your hosting company is...where are the

servers physically located? Though it rarely ever happens, if the web hosting

company lacks redundancy or backup, if any drastic event occurs at the site

of the servers, there goes your online presence. (This scenario really

happened: At the World Trade Center when 9/11 occurred).

WEBSTATS:

Traffic is the lifeblood of any internet business. Being able to track and

analyze where traffic is coming from is a great advantage. Having such a tool

at your disposal would enable you to make accurate and informed changes to

your website to better position it for even more traffic. Plenty of web

hosting companies provide such tracking and analysis tools with their various

packages...even those 4-dollar-a-month or less, hosting services. So there

really is no reason for you to settle for a web host that lacks this feature.

When choosing a web host it's of course important to consider the cost (some hosting can be very expensive) but here are some other important things you should take into consideration too:

Web Hosting Space: Some web hosts will only give you 500MB or so of space. This could be a concern if you are looking at creating large websites.

Bandwidth: Some web hosts will severely limit the bandwidth you can use before you incur extra charges.

Uptime: There's no point in having a website if people can't see it. Does your web host offer at least a 99% uptime guarantee?

Number of websites allowed: If you're looking to host more than one website on your account, will your web host charge you more to do this?

Support: If you have any problems you need to be able to contact your web host quickly and easily to get the problem sorted.

I have used Hostgator as my web host for over two years now and have been very very impressed with them. You are over thinking this database thing becuase both are equal in performance for a small shopping cart. Windows hosting is usually more and if you go with MSSQL its usually an add on that will cost you a bit more. I had the client physically present for the web hosting purchase (to enter e.g. credit card info including validation number on back of card) and to enter an agreed-upon access password, for both of us. We printed website access info (logon info, FTP access info, etc. Most assuredly, the client had access, in case my services prove unsatisfactory, or in case the client proves unsatisfactory to me and (for either of these reasons) we decide to quit doing business with each other...

If the hosting company is experiencing server maintenance, you may not be able to access your blog for a stipulated time. However, if your hosting company gets busted, then you will lose all your entries. It is advisable to make a backup of all your posts once in while. If you're going to make your site primarily a blog, then I personally recommend Wordpress. Check with your host's site what they provide before signing up. Most hosts come with Wordpress included. You just need to do a simple configuration to get it started once you get the host. All about Wordpress here at http://wordpress.org/

If you use Wordpress, it has a function built in where it will allow you to make a full backup of your blog and convert it to something like a XML file. If you have a last known copy of this backup file made, if one day your hosting server dies on you, you can easily get a new host and just import this file and all the saved entries will be retained. Or what codecs can I use to make the Youtube compression ineffective toward destroying my video quality? I have a Mac OS X and the quality of the video is HD quality, sharp and rich in color at the time of upload to Youtube and other hosting sites.. but when they are through with it.. it always loses 50% of it's quality.. As you know, you are going to have to learn to say no from the start! But now that you said yes, you can either fib and say you have asked your friends if they would come, and no one wants to. That they don't like to go to any parties where things are sold. Put the blame on them!

Or just be honest and tell her you have changed your mind. As long as you have not set a date, it won't upset her schedule. If she gets huffy, tell her you are sorry, but you you just don't want to do it. Sales people are pushy---that's how they make money!

Just don't let her schedule a party and then you give a lame excuse at the last minute for not having it. That would not be fair to her or to your friends who might have given up other plans to do you a favor!

So tell her no---and soon! If she gets mad, too bad. She's been told no before.

Or you have an unexpected family emergency and have to leave town the for weekend. Then sneek away to a cozy bed and breakfast with your significant other for a weekend of fun! Or just tell her that your hardly getting any responses to the party so it may not even be worth her while to throw it if only 1 or 2 people said they are coming.

How to start my own web hosting and domain selling buisness?
Mmmmm..... sounds like you are really starting from scratch, and I would recommend you get a bit more experience with the domain/hosting environment before selling to others as you will be called on to support problems, and you want to be able to communicate with both your clients and your suppliers.

If you are trying to go for the 'cheap and cheerful' market, then I'd caution against it as there are a lot of players out there who can provide very cheap hosting. To make a few bucks, you are going to have to charge more, so what is the advantage to them using you instead of another service?

In practice, it is very easy.

1. Buy a cheap 'reseller' hosting account.

There are many 'reseller' packages available from different places (avoid digitalvisionhosting.com as my experience has been they are too unreliable). These usually allow you to host multiple domains for a flat monthly/annual fee. For example if you have a 25 domain hosting package for $200 a year, then each domain will be costing you $8 a year (Whether there are actually any domains being hosted or not). You can then sell individual domain hosting for whatever you think you can get, and the difference will be your gross profit.

A reseller account usually gives you a 'Web Host Manager' where you set up 'packages' (which control the amount of resources you make available), and 'accounts' (which you make for each domain that is hosted) which have their own 'Control Panel'.

2. Domains

Domains are cheap on the whole. It would seem pointless to buy domains before you know what anyone wants, so you would purchase a domain when you know what is wanted.

Domains are registered with a 'Registrar'. There are many domain registration sites. You need to check that a domain is available before you can buy it.

I would think it unlikely you will be able to make any money selling domains as you would have sell them more expensively than you buy them, and the client can probably get them cheaper elsewhere, (unless you can buy in bulk which I would think unlikely, at least to start with).

Also, you do not need to buy domains to host them. The Registrar control the Name Servers (DNS) of the domain. To host the domain, the domain DNS records need to point to your hosting DNS Servers, which is easy for the domain owner to do.

However, there can be limitations, especially on the 'free' domains which are often offered if you buy a cheap hosting account for a fixed period (often a year). The Hosting provider usually 'owns' the domain but lets you use it, and locks the domain so it cannot be transferred. The economy goes something like this:

Sell a hosting package for a year. Say is costs you $10 and you charge $80. You buy the domain for $10. Gross profit to you of $60. You 'own' the domain so you can control where it is hosted (you want it on your hosting of course), and prevents the client from moving to another host, thereby losing you an account. This forces the client to stay with your hosting as you can refuse to allow it to be hosted elsewhere.

I personally do not like this practice, but it is very common for so called 'free' domains. As you can see, it is not really free as such, but that's business I guess.

I won't try and go into all the issues, but you have to bear in mind that if the client does not want to renew the domain and your hosting, then you will be left with a domain that is not wanted, and still have to pay the renewal fee, or let it expire and it will become available for registration again on a first come first serve basis.

Other issues:

If you are going to host domains, then you will likely have clients who do not know what theya re doing, or screw things up, and you will be expected to support them. If you do not, then you are unlikely to get a good reputation, so consider your terms and conditions very carefully, and get some experience before you go for it.

It is easy to do if you know what you are doing, and use the 'reseller' approach. If you want to go into buyig your own servers etc, then you will up the costs and effort, and is this something your are competent to do yet?

My advice is, get familiar with the environment of buying and hosting domains in a small way to make sure you can handle it comfortably. After that, it is more a less of question of scaling up.

Remember there is a lot of competition around, and you are not going to take on the big boys? So you will be a smaller 'added value' type of reseller, so what value can you bring to your enterprise and attract others to part with the money to you and not someone else?

I'm not cautioning against it, but I get the impression you do not know very much about this, and I suggest you need to know a lot more before you embark on something like this.

I'll tell you some of the things I do every year for superbowl. I buy the frozen chicken wings that's the 10 lb. bag. Defrost and season this with Sazon and Adobo and black pepper, these items are Goya brand items. Then I fry them and we have great chicken wings. I garnish with celery and blue cheese or ranch dressing. To kick these up a notch just add some Tabasco sauce. Yum.

Another thing I do is make a chili with no beans dip, with Philadelphia cream cheese, cheddar cheese and salsa. This is a great dip for Tostito chips or Tortilla chips.

You may also want to buy large shrimp and serve with a great cocktail sauce. Don't forget the lemon.

One last item we always have is pigs in a blanket. I purchase the crescent rolls and the cocktail wieners and make this myself.

P.S.

I recently started making a spicy spinach and artichoke dip. You'll find the recipe on the back of the Knorrs vegetable dip bag. My husband and kids love this.

I usually host a superbowl party almost every year or poker nights about twice a month so I know what guys love to eat. Mexican dips, I make a 7 layer dip with nacho cheese on the side plus hot wings. Hamburgers, hot dogs, brats off the grill are always a hit. Cheesy chicken empanadas, or a good pot of hot chili. Lots of chips, beer, and margaritas for our parties too. And for dessert I make cookies or brownies in the shape of footballs. They love em! i'll tell you...whenever i have a party i make this one snack that people go crazy over: on a cookie sheet, place one layer of doritos (whole chips) and top with a piece of cheddar cheese, one pepperoni, and a jalapeno slice. put in the oven just long enough to melt the cheese and cook the pepperoni (about 5 min. on 350). they are so awesome.

spinach dip is really good (go to foodnetwork.com and look up hot spinach dip by paula deen...her recipe is great)

make potatoe skins w/cheese, bacon, onions and serve w/sour cream.

another idea that i have seen but haven't tried: waffle fry, an itty bitty hamber, slice of cherry tomato, and a pickle. sounds yummy.

spicy queso dip:

Ingredients:

1-16oz. pkg. Velveeta cheese 1 can Rotel (10 oz.) ½ lb. Sausage, hot

-NOTE: Several varieties of Rotel exist. Choose to suit your taste.

-Brown sausage and drain. Set aside. Drain Rotel. Set aside. Cut Velveeta into cubes and melt in microwave in a small bowl using only about 10 cubes at a time to prevent burning. Stir occasionally. Once each bowl of cheese has melted, transfer into a crock-pot on low heat. After all cheese is melted and is in the crock-pot, add sausage and Rotel. Combine thoroughly.

crab dip:

Ingredients:

½ cup mayo ½ cup sour cream 2 Tbsp. cream cheese

1 Tbsp. Old Bay 1 tsp. lemon juice

¼ cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese ¼ cup freshly grated cheddar cheese

2-6 oz cans cooked crab mean, drained, flaked, and cartilage removed

1 tsp. dried dill 2 Tbsp. finely chopped green or red onion

6 dashes of hot sauce dash of ground red pepper

-Combine all ingredients. Refrigerate 2 to 24 hours before serving. Serve with crackers or in individual phyllo shells.

Ingredients:

Puff Pastry 3 Tbsp. Parmesan Cheese Sliced Ham 1 egg

1 Tbsp. Water ¼ tsp. Cayenne pepper

-Roll puff pastry sheet out with a rolling pin into a rectangle about 10 X 14 inches. Cut the pastry in half lengthwise. Mix egg and water in a small dish. Brush both halves of pastry on the exposed side with mixture of egg and water. On one half, sprinkle Parmesan mixed with cayenne pepper. Top the half with cheese with sliced ham, overlapping. Fold over other half of pastry, egg side down. Roll with rolling pin to seal. Brush top of pastry with egg and water mixture. Roll into a log, starting at the long end. Cut into 24 pieces. Place cut side down on baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush each spiral lightly with egg and water mixture. Sprinkle each spiral lightly with Parmesan cheese. Bake at 400º for 12-14 min. Serve warm or at room temp.

Reply:A lot of people already have some really great ideas. Let me add a few things that are on my table at the super bowl party:

Cocktail wienies with equal parts ketchup and grape jelly. Ex: I use two packages of cocktail wienies and one cup ketchup and one cup grape jelly. They are a huge hit!

Veggie cream cheese dip: Knorr Vegetable soup mix, cream cheese and a little cheddar cheese. Serve with crackers.

Meatballs: sweet and sour sauce, pineapple, and barbeque sauce. There are never any leftovers.

Always chips n dip. Veggies n dip usually go over better with the women.

Of course, if it were my house, I'd have to have a pot of my famous chili which normally has at least a habanero or 4 in it.

Hot dogs and hamburgers.

And that's usually about it. Oh, and LOTS of beer.

Put some of that black stuff under your eyes, just have fun with it. Buy some sports trivia cards or a fun game to play during half time. BBQ is always great, messy though, you may not want that. Hot dogs, peanuts, pretzels, game food you would eat if you were at the game. Just think like a man. Ask yourself what a man would like. You girls will most likely end up entertaining each other in the kitchen anyway. If you are serving alcohol, make sure no one that has to drive has too much. Have some kind of contest, offer small prize to the winner. The possibilities are endless. This could be the start of a new tradition for your family and friends. Release your inner Martha Stewart. Good luck. Oh yeah, take pictures or video if you can. Make sure to get all your hard work on record. This will help you not repeat in the years to come too.

If not then it might cost you a little but consider signing up an ISP 'pay as you go' just to get the space. It will cost you for the time you spent uploading your files but is still a cheap alternative. In fact some ISP's used to let you upload from a different account, Virgin.net was one but I don't know if they still do.

If you have a domain name, point it at your 'free' web space and hey presto, who's to know! Before anyone gets big idea's doesn't work well for commercial sites for all sorts of reasons!

Web Hosting Space: Some web hosts will only give you 500MB or so of space. This could be a concern if you are looking at creating large websites.

Bandwidth: Some web hosts will severely limit the bandwidth you can use before you incur extra charges.

I'm hosting a potluck picnic this weekend so i told everyone to bring something. But as the host, what am i in charge of bringing?

What supplies do i need to have when hosting a PICNIC?
Main dishes:the meats,cheeses,drinks,ice {at least 3 bags}

*Plates,Napkins,Cups,Utensils,Garbage Bags.

*Now a picnic makes me think of :::burgers,hot dogs,ribs,steaks,shrimp,BBQ chicken,{I would choose three}.

*Cheese:cheddar,pepper jack,provolone.

*Bread:Buns for burgers and hot dogs.

*Condiments: Ketchup,Miracle Whip,Mayo,Mustard,Relish,Steak Sauce.

*You can also bring a couple bags of potato chips,pretzels,and ranch,and french onion dips. A Vegetable Platter might be nice.

Drinks: Water,Tea,Sodas,if alcohol,I would advise a light beer of choice,kool-aid for the kids.

Most likely they might bring::baked beans,potato salad,regular salad,deviled eggs,pasta salads,macaroni and cheese,mashed potatoes,broccoli casserole.

Music is a nice touch,a mix of all types.

Drinks of some kind, non alcoholic if you have said for them to bring their own alcohol, otherwise you will need to get some beer in, and some of those 3 litre casks of wine. (a red and a white)

if you are looking for a cheap and good host, consider www.3ix.com. i don't think there's anyone that can beat their basic plan which starts at US$1 per month. i've been using them for about 3 years now without any complaints.

i'm not too sure about their design services though.... but if you engage them to do the design, you'll get your hosting and domain name free for 1 year.

since you are likely to be uploading new pictures every now and then, you may want to tell them to design an easily scalable site that can grow together with your business. a site that provides a "Maintenance" page that allows you to manage (ie. add/modify/delete) picture "Catagories", and also a facility to add/delete pictures in each catagory.

however, if you don't mind getting your hands dirty in techie stuff, you should like their cPanel (http://control.3ix.org/), which is a graphical interface for managing almost anything on your website. many other hosting comanies offer this cPanel too..... as it has become more or less a standard offering on most of them. don't accept anything less.

Reply:Go Daddy and Chill Web Hosting are both good. Go Daddy is completely automated, I dont think Chill Web Hosting is (you will probably have to email or call them to get started). I bought my domains from Omnis and Go Daddy and then host my accounts at Chill. Chill has more felxibility and more personalized service. Both have good prices and good hosting plans.

Reply:I have used 1and1.com for many years. They are easy to deal with and have very limited down time (I can think of two times in 5 years). Their customer service is good too with both phone and email. Email takes about a day to respond, but I have always gotten the right answer on the first response.

I also find them very economical. While they have limits on the size of web pages, they have yet to say anything to me for when I exceed my allotment.

I am starting up a website, and I've noticed that when signing up for hosting, it asks what kind of hosting you want, Windows or Linux, what is the difference. Are there compatability issues? Will I be able to use my mac?

What is the difference between hosting on windows or linux?
You would be able to use any operating system to view the pages. Whether you want to host on Windows or Linux determines what operating system you want the host to run. There are standards in the form of protocols (FTP, HTTP, SSH) in place that would solve any communication problems. (The way a mac, windows, or linux computer can all access the same website, because it uses HTTP.)

The main factor in your decision should be what programming languages you want to run. If you want to use PHP/MySQL or Oracle based scripts, I would choose Linux or Unix.

If you want to use ASP.NET or any .NET based scripts, I would choose Windows, as Linux does not support these languages.

In my experience, Linux runs faster and more stable than Windows. But I'm not going to say 'it runs faster period' as that usually leads to flame wars.

Reply:Yes, it is possible, I do it with domain names I have through godaddy.com. They have a service that they call domain forwarding. I put the other sites into a subfolder of the main site, and then the second domain name just points there.
