What can my family and I expect from hosting a foreign exchange student?

We plan on hosting a high-school aged girl from Spain this summer. What can my family and I expect from this rewarding experience? Does anyone have any experience with this sort of thing?

Reply:First, I have two anecdotes to tell you about exchange students, one is very bad and one is excellent. I'll get the bad one out of the way first, my name is Alex btw and I live in the Isle of Man (UK), I study French and there are three other people in my class, two of which are girls, the two girls were offered the chance to have tw French girls come and stay with them, one girl called Graihagh( pronounced Greya) had a girl called Lais ( Lace) and she turned out to be a thief, the night before she was going back to France we held a party for her at Graihagh's house and I went upstairs to use the toilet, I walked past Graihagh's bedroom and saw Lais searching through Graihagh's dresser drawers, I told Graihagh and she searched her bag and found makeup a pair of hair straighteners and two pairs of Jeans. Obviously we were all glad to see the back of her.

However, do not despair, the other girl in the class (Bethan if you are interested) had a girl called Tressie who was great, she was an ice skater and had represented France in the olympics despite only being 17, anyway we all had a good laugh with her and she loved her time with us.

The point I am trying to make is that it is a lottery if you let somebody into your house that you don't know, you could get someone nice or a thief lol. The best thing to do is try and get to know this girl through phone calls or msn messenger first and then decide. If you want any more help you can email me on alexmcresswell@yahoo.co.uk or msn me at cressie1000@hotmail.com. Good Luck. Alex
