What's the difference between Linux hosting and Microsoft hosting?

I'm starting a website with 1%26amp;1 and their hosting plans have either Linux hosting or Microsoft hosting. Does it matter what OS I'm using or is this how the server runs? What are the differences?

What's the difference between Linux hosting and Microsoft hosting?
Differences will arise when it comes to applications that you're going to use on the server to support your web site.

If you plan to rely on open-source PHP or Perl-based systems, go with Linux. Also, if you plan to send e-mails from your scripts, it is much easier to do that from Unix too.

In general, unless you have some Windows-specific application or technology that is going to support your web site, there are really no good reasons not to prefer Linux.

Linux is much more reliable and secure than Windows.
Reply:It really only matters (to you) if you are going to get involved in the server admin. You won't; it doesn't; unless of course you want to make a political statement, or there is a price break.
Reply:I believe that they probably have servers running both Windows and Linux, so I would suggest you look into what the differences are.

Good luck and I hope I helped you!
Reply:Linux hosting is generally more secure, the only "real" differences is that Microsoft Hosting can run "Frontpage Extensions", but if you are using "Normal" web editors (not Frontpage of microsoft ones for example) there is absolutely no difference ... Linux just is smoother and more reliable.
Reply:Linux is a more secure, reliable platform for hosting websites from little 1-pagers to full-blown ecommerce web sites.

They are far less likely to be hacked.

Go this route.

How to select your reasonable web hosting in an imaginative means?
The best process for finding the right fit for you when it comes to web hosting is elimination. You need to look at several options. First compare feature-by-feature then dollar-for-dollar. Reply:Choosing a web host will be critical to your business. Issues such a reliability, downtime, features, support, bandwidth etc all need to be clearly outlined. I've found it best to check for reviews on companies before selecting them. A good resource is listed in the source section below.

How does domain hosting work for sites that later become exceptionally popular?

Say popular sites that we all visit, Google, Yahoo, popular messageboards, other search engines. When these sites initially start out do they use some average hosting site like Go Daddy, etc?

How does domain hosting work for sites that later become exceptionally popular?
You can start small and use shared hosting. If traffic becomes big, then you move to a dedicated server where only your site is in that box. Or you can buy your own box and host your site yourself if you are capable

Most of the big companies, in anticipation of traffic and the fact that they have investors and venture capital funds to back them up, buy and maintain their own servers. They will use some third party services such as Akamai for load balancing, but most of the sites you mentioned are tech oriented sites so they already have techies on board who can maintain and create their own servers and not use services such as Go Daddy

What is the best green web hosting service on the net?

Green web hosting are hosting providers that are powered by renewable energy such as wind and solar power. I am looking for the one with the best balance of service and world-saving initiatives. Thanks!

What is the best green web hosting service on the net?
There's several -- the top of the lot are Thinkhost and Hostpapa. Both have great affordable plans, and both fund environmental initiatives like tree-planting, awareness campaigns etc.

In my opinion, http://squidoo.com/greenwebhosting is one of the top green web hosting resources on the net today.

Anyone have tips for hosting a party and a good macaroni salad recipe?

I am hosting a party at our new house this weekend. I've never played host before, so I have no idea what to do. There will be about 20 people there and hopefully it doesn't rain.

Along with entertaining, I need to develop a menu. I believe we will do hamburgers and hot dogs (any other ideas are welcomed), but I am stumped for side dishes. Does anyone have an easy and delicious macaroni salad recipe? I would prefer if it didn't have any seafood in it.

Anyone have tips for hosting a party and a good macaroni salad recipe?
Macaroni Salad

1 package salad macaroni, cooked

1 red bell pepper, chopped

1/2 onion, chopped

3 ribs of celery, chopped

Mayonnaise (however much you want it to be, start with a small amount and add a little at a time until you reach desired consistency)

1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese (depends on how much you want in the salad)

Mix the macaroni, bell pepper, onion and celery together, then add mayonnaise. Add cheese last, and any more mayo, if required. Salt and Pepper to taste. Better if made the night before, the flavors merge together.

Fresh fruit skewers are always a fun addition - watermelon, cantelope, pineapple. Chips, potato salad, or cole slaw are always good, too. If you want recipes for the potato salad or cole slaw, just email me.
Reply:ok lol heres mine u boil noodles and then when they are done put mayo and then put corn and then ham and then cheese make sure u cut them into little squares or as long as u cut them its done lol but its so good im serious!!!! Report It

Reply:Another simple thing you can have is Baked Beans.

1/2 lb bacon (browned %26amp; drained)

1 1/2 lbs ground beef (browned %26amp; drained)

2 large onions chopped (cook w/beef)

2 cans (1 lb-14oz) Pork %26amp; Beans

1 (1 lb) can Diced Tomatoes in juice

3/4 Cup packed Brown Sugar

1 tsp Chili Powder

Generous Dash of Celery Salt

Throw it in the Crock Pot

I personally like to use a full pound of bacon.

Salad

Large size of Cool Whip

Same size of Cottage Cheese

Large package Jello powder (flavor to match fruit)

1 can (1 lb-14 oz) fruit (to match Jello)

Cut fruit into bite size pieces - stir all together - chill.

Peach is a great salad. Fresh Strawberry is a great dessert.Frozen strawberry can be too watery.
Reply:I have hosted quite a few get togethers and have noticed that food food doesn't always get eaten.

Most people (especially if enjoying cocktails/drinks) really go after the finger foods.

Reply:Macarroni salad!

Boiled noodles (elbow noodles)

Mayo

Salt

Pepper

diced, peeled cucumber

died tomatoes

green onions

Blend noodles with mayo, salt and pepper. Then add chopped veggies. Be sure that you dont put too much mayo. You barely want it to cover the noodles.

For some reason, this salad tastes better if you make it the day before.

Baked beans are awesome too!
Reply:Ingredients:

• 1 16 oz box small macaroni or pasta spirals

• 1 green pepper, chopped

• 1 medium onion, chopped

• 2 cucumbers, chopped

• 2 cups finely shredded cheddar cheese

• Salt and pepper to taste

Method:

Cook pasta according to package directions. Rinse with cold water; drain and combine with all the other ingredients. Chill for 1 to 2 hours before serving.

Notes:

Make sure to rinse the pasta in cold water to prevent the cheese from melting. A great quick recipe that pleases everyone.

Number of servings: 10-12
Reply:Wow, it looks like you got a bunch of great recipes for the salad already so I won't add to that part. I'll just deal with the first part of your question.

When planning a party the best place to start is to try to determine the 'feel' you want to create. Do you want people to hang out, feel comfortable kicking off their shoes, mingle and socialize, whatever?

If you want to make sure that people move freely around the house and not cluster around one stop I suggest putting food and drinks in different locations. Putting everthing in the kitchen makes it terribly crowded when everyone wants a drink at the same time.

Another good idea is to pair the right music with the party. Want people to dance? The music must be consistant to keep that kind of energy high.

Want people to talk? Make sure the music is not loud and keep it light, some nice jazz is good.

I have a ton of ideas. (It's kind of what I do *wink*)

How would you feel about hosting a foreign exchange student in your home?

I am directing this question not only at Americans but at all nationalities who might read the question and have thoughts about the subject.

This year my family is hosting two students, one from Germany and one from Hong Kong, both girls. In the past we have hosted two boys from Germany, one boy from Korea, and one girl each from Germany and Hong Kong. This is our third full year to host, and we also hosted for a partial year.

Our son was a foreign exchange student in Germany for a year.

We have had exceptional kids to work with. The experiences have been incredible and we are connected to all of our past and present kids.

Would you consider hosting a child from a foreign land?

How would you feel about hosting a foreign exchange student in your home?
I'm on my 13th! Our first just as an arrival family. I have four Danes, three Germans, two Swedes, two Swiss, one Finn and one Brasilian!

As you can tell, we love it. We've also had exceptional students to work with as well ... and we wouldn't trade any of them!

To top it all off, we spent our 25th anniversary on a three-week tour of Europe visiting many of them!

Hosting not only gives you a new son or daughter, but it gives you a whole new family as well!

The one thing that concerns me about your question however, is that it ALMOST seems like a recruitment of host families. I'm sure you really didn't mean it that way, but I certainly would NOT be looking for families for students on the Internet!

Congratulations on your international family!
Reply:Yea I'd definitely consider doing that. It sounds fun, although I don't think living with me would be the "American experience" they were probably looking for. Home, School, Work, and Sleep....

And hey if the female exchange students are hott, it wouldn't hurt to have some eye candy around the house.
Reply:Yes. My family's hosted 2 Japanese exchange students, 1 German exchange student and 2 German interns. I enjoy it although it can be annoying to pick and send the kids to school or when they make something for tea and not clean up!

I was also an exchange student abroad.

I have my own place now and would like to host an exchange student again but I doubt any of the organisations would let a single lady of 22 to host any;) Exchange students can also be expensive! Besides board and food, you have to take them out (which I enjoy) and where I'm from, we pay for everything and usually even give the kids an allowance (not because we HAVE to but because we want to.. it's like my parents give me an allowance so it would be unfair if they didn't give their temporarily adopted 'son' his allowance!).

Whoops, back to the question: I would definitely host an exchange student.
Reply:Yes, I'd definitely do it.

I have an overseas scholarship programme I run for primary aged Thai students. We rely on the kindness of western people to host our children. In my experience, families who are 'in it for the money' really turn out to be the worst families. Those looking to gain something other than profit out of the experience are always the better ones. It's often the way that the family wants their own child to meet children from other cultures, so therefore offer to host one of our children.

To me, you sound like someone who is involved for the benefit of those students you are hosting. That is a truly selfless attribute to you as a human, well done.
Reply:I would love to do that, but our house is only two bedrooms and they are both full of stuff. Kudos to you!
Reply:We are hosting right now. This is our 5th student and she is PERFECT! She's eager to learn about...everything. Right now she's watching American football and trying to learn the rules. She brought her camera and is making a scrapbook. She tries any food we cook, she's making friends in school, just everything is perfect! The other 4 we hosted in the past were utter nightmares so I still can't recommend hosting to people because the odds of getting another spoiled selfish brat who doesn't want to be here is just too high.

Hosting...?

Hello, I want to know would it be ok to sell hosting of of the 1and1 Business package? I looked through their TOS and I didn't see anything... Also is it possible to do it with my Cpanel? (and protect my site's files) ..Thanks - Colin

Hosting...?
You can resell 1%26amp;1 via their affiliates program.

http://order.1and1.com/xml/order/Affilia...

If 1%26amp;1 allows you to host multiple domains and multiple FTP users, and you're smart enough to be able to keep others from figuring out how to log in to the panel and deal only with their own FTP, then I see nothing in the 1%26amp;1 TOS that prevents you from charging others to use your Web space.

Reply:I would recommend http://www.apthost.com Report It

Reply:One can buy anonymous hosting, offshore servers, offshore hosting from Panama based hosting company Cyber Cast Intl.

http://www.offshore-web-hosts.... Report It

Reply:1and1 you can do it but its not a very good place to use as they are very cheap, tech support is not great, and they are not going to allow you to use much cpu/mem resources. There are a lot better cpanel hosts out there you can use that focus on people starting hosting companies.

To protect your site's files with a password you can do that in cpanel using the password protect icon.

Also reseller hosting articles try reseller hosting guide at http://www.resellerguide.com/ , they are a pretty good resource.
Reply:Yes, go to: http://www.4clickdesigns.com they offer all of that and more.
