What type of features should the web hosting service have?

I'm trying to figure out the best route for my hypothetical online t-shirt shop. (It's an assignment).

I'm trying to figure out which hosting would be best. What type of features do you think I'd need?

And would I need linux or windows? Why would I need windows? Why would I need to use SQL?

What type of features should the web hosting service have?
Hi,

When choosing a web host it's of course important to consider the cost (some hosting can be very expensive) but here are some other important things you should take into consideration too:

Web Hosting Space: Some web hosts will only give you 500MB or so of space. This could be a concern if you are looking at creating large websites.

Bandwidth: Some web hosts will severely limit the bandwidth you can use before you incur extra charges.

Uptime: There's no point in having a website if people can't see it. Does your web host offer at least a 99% uptime guarantee?

Number of websites allowed: If you're looking to host more than one website on your account, will your web host charge you more to do this?

Support: If you have any problems you need to be able to contact your web host quickly and easily to get the problem sorted.

I have used Hostgator as my web host for over two years now and have been very very impressed with them. Firstly they're very cheap but still give me more web hosting space and bandwidth than I'll ever need, the ability to host unlimited websites, a 99.9% uptime guarantee and great customer support. You can find them at http://www.webhostgator.info
Reply:Look for a host that has an out of the box shopping cart. Usually can be installed in your hosting control panel.

You are over thinking this database thing becuase both are equal in performance for a small shopping cart. Windows hosting is usually more and if you go with MSSQL its usually an add on that will cost you a bit more. I am a microsoft developer meaning that i use microsoft products to develope with, .NET and MSSQL. PHP and MySql are just as powerful so you will need to make your choice that is compatible with your scripting or programming language which is?

Try this http://www.hostgator.com/ they have two carts that can be used in their hosting package built in PHP/Mysql
Reply:You'll need a hosts that will support come form of scripting I.E. PHP/ASP/ASP.Net/CGI/etc.

Linux based host should be able to support all them except ASP/ASP.Net

Windows based host should be able to support all of them.

You'll need a Database (SQL/Orcale/etc) if maintain an invertory perhaps, or to store login details etc
Reply:Linux Servers are a little cheaper, faster and safer in compared with Windows. It woud be better you pick a linux server unless you insist on using programs like ASP, or ASP.Net. So you find most of reliable hosts running on Linux servers.

I have recommended before choosing the service found at: http://bluehost-service.atspace.com which I'm sure it would work for you. By using their service, everything you need for your business website is provided in one eCommerce Hosting Package with high quality customer service.

You can also try: http://top5hosts.atspace.com/business to get more information regarding 5 leaders in the E-commerce web hosting industry. You would see all, but one of them, run on linux servers.

Good Luck!
